Masonry Note:Standard 4", 6", 8", and 12" CMU blocks all share the same front face dimension (8" × 16"). Changing block width changes wall thickness, total weight, pallets required, grout volume, and price, while face block count remains identical. (8" Half blocks use 8" × 8" faces and double the block count).

Length × height yields gross area. We deduct door and window openings to calculate the net surface area to be built.

2 · Block & Course Calculations

Standard 8×16 in CMU covers 0.89 sq ft (1.125 blocks/sq ft). We calculate courses high (height ÷ face height) and blocks per course (length ÷ face length).

3 · Pallets, Accessories & Takeoff

Blocks round up to full pallets. Mortar (33.3 blocks/bag), grout fill, rebar, weight, and accessories costs are combined into an itemized takeoff.

How do I calculate how many concrete blocks I need for a wall?

Multiply your wall length by height to get total square footage, subtract any doors or windows, and divide by the block's face area. A standard 8x8x16 in CMU covers 0.8889 sq ft (1.125 blocks per sq ft). Add 10% for waste, cutting, and breakage. Our calculator automatically computes total blocks, courses high, and blocks per course.

How many courses high will my block wall be?

Divide your wall height in inches by the nominal face height of the block (8 inches for standard CMU, 6 inches for retaining blocks). For example, an 8 ft high wall is 96 inches high, which equals 12 courses of 8-inch blocks.

How do you estimate mortar, grout, and rebar for a CMU wall?

Mortar: Estimate 3 bags (80 lb masonry mortar) per 100 CMU blocks (or blocks / 33.3). Grout Core Fill: Calculated from the hollow core volume per block. Rebar: Vertical rebar placed every 16, 24, 32, or 48 inches on-center plus horizontal bond beams every 4 feet of wall height.

How many blocks come on a pallet?

Pallet quantities vary by block size: 4-inch CMU has 144 blocks/pallet; 6-inch CMU has 120 blocks/pallet; 8-inch CMU has 90 blocks/pallet; 12-inch CMU has 60 blocks/pallet; retaining wall blocks have 45/pallet. The calculator automatically rounds up to full pallets.

Is the material cost estimate final?
